In a Transformative Era from Territorial Governance to Community Regeneration

As an opening, two infographics are drawn to illustrate the evolution of modern planning theories and shifting discourses around China’s urban-rural development since the market reform. Basing on the scale of planning projects and the types of planning put forward in the territorial spatial planning system over time, the magazine categorises planning projects into eight genres: city-cluster planning, major functional zone planning, national territorial master-planning, urban design, landscape planning, tourism planning, rural planning, and community planning. Under each genre, planners and planning data analysts have been interviewed to highlight the differences in workflow under the old urban-rural planning system and the new territorial spatial planning system. These interviews have shown the need for planning professionals to reshape their professional identities and redefine their job responsibilities due to the challenges met in their way of thinking, knowledge structures, working methods, and application of technologies. This will also affect the development prospects of China's planning and design enterprises and trends in the planning industry in the coming years.
