Paradoxe Paris: Returning to Essentials of Urban Place-Making

From a perspective of urban planning, the Haussmann's plan for Paris never ceases to intrigue us with the relentless urban vitality it creates. How were the rules and design standards‒especially for street scale and building volume‒made to survive social and economic changes for over a century? Before giving a prompt answer, let's ponder upon the question itself. If Haussmann's renovation of Paris was so legitimate, why hasn't it become a phenomenal paradigm for global cities? In fact, Paris has reinvented its model multiple times in urban expansion, most evidently in the 2007 Grand Paris plan and a major urban transformation around 2013 and 2014. Perhaps the planning history of Paris has offered us an opportunity to revisit the nature of Paris's place-making, and to summarize the lessons and potentials it may provide to other cities. Juxtaposing modern planning ideologies with Paris's evolution through housing, revolution, art, sports, festive events and immigration, Issue 085 makes a series of explorative inquiries into the discourse above.
